Veneers , in their most basic form, are a shell 0.3 – 0.7 mm thick bonded to the visible (labial) surface of a tooth that has been lightly prepared beforehand. Bonded in place, the veneer corrects the colour, the shape and, to a degree, the position of the tooth. By material there are two main kinds - composite and ceramic (porcelain).
Composite veneers have several main advantages, one of them a lower price that most patients can afford. They are made in the surgery in a single visit.
They have their drawbacks too: composite is less durable and less strong than a ceramic veneer.
Porcelain veneers are the standard veneers: a ceramic shell made by a dental technician is fitted to the prepared part of the tooth. Of all cosmetic treatments, veneers remove the least hard tooth tissue
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and bridges – they are built from a metal base (coping), which gives strength, and a ceramic layer, which gives the appearance and makes them hard to tell from natural teeth. A drawback of metal-ceramic crowns and bridges is the grey metal margin at the base of the crown, which reaches the gum. If the gum recedes from the edge of the crown, that greyish metal margin shows and spoils the appearance.
All-ceramic crowns and bridges are the most aesthetic fixed restorations cosmetic dentistry makes. They contain no metal and are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Adhesive bridges of glass fibre and composite - in a single visit, and without grinding down the supporting teeth, a highly aesthetic bridge is made that is biocompatible, strong and looks excellent. Properly cared for and precisely made, these bridges last for many years and can be adjusted and repaired in the mouth. If implant treatment is chosen later, the bridge comes off quickly and easily without harming the healthy neighbouring teeth.
